THE SQUEAKY WHEEL PROJECT

Presents Symposium on Teen Dating Violence

Houston, TX---The Squeaky Wheel Project™ Symposium on Teen Dating Violence takes place on January 27th, 2010 at Lone Star College Cy-Fair Branch Public Library which is located at 9191 Barker Cypress Road; Cypress, TX  77433 from 5:30 pm to 7 pm.   In preparation for the 4th National Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Week which is February 1-6, 2010,  The Squeaky Wheel Project™ Symposium on Teen Dating Violence is designed to raise awareness about the issue of teen dating violence, integrate preventative initiatives on each campus, grades 7-12 within the school districts in the greater Houston area, and implement on-going teen dating abuse awareness and prevention curriculums in compliance with HB 121.

On May 18, 2007, Governor Rick Perry signed House Bill 121 into law.  HB 121 effectively immediately mandated that all school districts in Texas adopt and implement a dating violence policy.  Tracking the language of HB 121, teen violence programs must include (1) a definition of dating violence, (2) sections of safety planning, (3) enforcement of protective orders, (4) school-based alternatives to protective orders, (5) training for teachers and administrators, (6) counseling for affected students, and (7) awareness education for students and parents/guardians.  The Squeaky Wheel Project™ assists school districts in fulfilling the requirements of HB 121 by offering comprehensive dating violence curriculums and STOP SHOPS which educate the student body about the teen dating abuse awareness and prevention.

At The Squeaky Wheel Project™ Symposium on Teen Dating Violence, school district trustee presidents and directors of guidance and counseling will have an opportunity to receive information about teen dating violence and prevention from a panel of expertise representing the Texas House of Representatives Committee on Public Education, Texas Education Association, Texas Association of School Boards, Texas Association of PTA’s, Texas Council of Family Violence,  Love Is Respect and the National Teen Dating Hotline, District Court 280, and The Squeaky Wheel Project.

To obtain information  about  Squeaky Wheel Project™ Symposium on Teen Dating Violence or to make reservations to attend, please email registrar@squeakyspeaks.com.   The Squeaky Wheel Project™ Symposium on Teen Dating Violence is a public service provided by You’re Living Proof, a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization that assists survivors of domestic violence.
